2011-10-21 2015-08-04 Researchers use many different designs and methods to study human development. The three most popular designs are Cross‐sectional: a number of different‐age individuals with the same trait or characteristic of interest are studied at a single time. Longitudinal: the same individuals are studied repeatedly over a specified period of time. A basic experimental design involves beginning with a sample (or subset of a population) and randomly assigning subjects to one of two groups: the experimental group or the control group. The experimental group is the group that is going to be exposed to an independent variable or condition the researcher is introducing as a potential cause of an event. Genetically informative study designs can be used to build upon knowledge developed in prior neuroimaging studies by estimating the degree to which smoking occurs in families, estimating the magnitude of genetic and environmental influences on smoking, and describing the mechanisms by which genetic and environmental effects function to increase risk for smoking. Example: a study to investigate gender differences in understanding of risks associated with playing in the road The study will have a quasi experimental design involving a comparison between girls and boys.

The aim of the study is a statement of what the researcher intents to investigate. The hypothesis of the study is an idea, derived from psychological theory which contains a prediction which can be verified or disproved by some kind of investigation, usually an experiment.
